Phoenix Education Centre

This is the central program for the Phoenix Education Centre. Pupils from the local postsecondary schools are invited to come after school to our space where they can work on homework and other educational projects. Mentors will work with the young people daily to focus on their educational needs and support will be provided for specific subjects, English, Maths, and ICT through volunteers. Young people will be encouraged to design individual educational pathways and to grow their self-esteem and confidence. There will also be a focus on adapting to challenges and resetting goals when their pathways change.

This program would work in conjunction with local schools and other relevant statutory bodies. Not every young person can excel in a school environment and schools do not have the resources to deal with challenging behaviour. This program will utilize a youth work approach to education. Using various accreditation programs and other similar courses, young people will be able to work through the program, ensuring that they can achieve their goals and gain the necessary employment and life skills that they will need to prosper.

This program brings in guest speakers on a monthly basis to present different topics and conversations around history, politics, culture and creative arts. The aim is to highlight how university and further education colleges are different to school and to encourage young people to pursue these pathways, whether on an academic or vocational pathway.

This program will work with the local community to address their educational and training needs on an ongoing basis. Recent research has highlighted community interest in obtaining GCSE’s as well as other training and upskilling that they currently face barriers to achieving. This will enable community members to re-enter the workforce or change direction from their current employment. This evening program will provide free creche facilities for participants.
